* Sri Lanka teachers observe black day
Friday, October 5, 2007, 13:40 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 05, Colombo: Black flags were hoisted in many government schools today, the International Teachers' Day, to protest to the government for not resolving the teachers' problem of long standing salary anomalies.

The Chairman of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union Joseph Stalin Fernando said that the teachers could not celebrate the International Teachers’ Day when they could not perform their duties respectfully. He said that the aim of the establishment of the Sri Lanka Teaching Service has been tarnished and severe salary anomalies have been created.

However, the academic activities of the schools were conducted as usual today.
