* Government to provide immediate relief for flood victims in Sri Lanka

May 07, Colombo: Under the directions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa a special team of officials visited the flood affected areas in the District of Galle to assess the situation and take immediate actions to provide adequate compensation for the displaced due to the recent floods.

The special team including Deputy Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare Lionel Premasiri, Coordinating Secretary to the President Kithsiri Abeygunawardena made arrangements to provide with essential commodities to the flood-displaced living in camps.

The team paying special attention to identify land areas more prone to landslides also initiated procedures necessary to rebuild the damaged infrastructure to bring back normalcy to the area soon.

Two areas in Kalutara and Galle districts have been identified as land-slide prone areas. Officials said precautionary measures will be taken to prevent occurrences of further landslides. Fifteen people have died and 121,325 have been displaced by floods, landslides, and other incidents following the recent torrential rains.
