May 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Transport has planned to develop the Kelaniweli railway line with South Korean assistance. A delegation of a Korean company is due in Sri Lanka next month for a feasibility study, Ministry sources said.
The railway line that stretches from Colombo to Avissawella will have a double line up to Homagama, a new signal system and other facilities. Speed limits and the unauthorized constructions that obstruct the smooth running will also be removed.
Kelaniweli railway line constructed by the English colonialists along the Kelani River valley ran up to Opanayaka in the Rathnapura district earlier, but now runs only up to Avissawella in the Colombo district.
