May 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s unemployed graduates have decided to intensify their agitations urging the government to provide them employments in the public sector. Accordingly, the Unemployed Graduates’ Joint Union is organizing a demonstration in Colombo next week.
A spokesperson of the union said that although the government allocated money to provide employment to 10,000 graduates, only a fraction of them were recruited. He also said that the government has so far failed to fulfill the pledges to grant 8,000 public sector jobs to graduates this year.
The Unemployed Graduates’ Joint Union also points out that there are 20,000 vacancies in the public sector.
Meanwhile unemployed graduates have started sathyagraha campaigns in Matara, Kurunegala and Kandy districts.
