May 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Trade, Marketing Development, Co-operatives and Consumer Affairs Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that the government will purchase big onion from the farmers in the coming harvesting season.
The Ministry aims to stabilize the prices of big onion in the harvesting season to benefit the farmer. The government has also imposed heavy taxes on imported big onion to help the local production.
Sri Lanka’s annual need of big onion is around 120,000 metric tons and half of it is produced locally.
