May 22, Colombo: In respect of Sri Lanka President’s request, the Jordan government has decided to release 65 Sri Lankans who were in jail for the failure to pay fines imposed on them.
The Sri Lankans were provided a general amnesty and acquitted from the fines worth of Rs.150,000, a Sri Lanka Presidential Secretariat spokesman said. The workers will return to the homeland soon.
Jordan employs about 65,000 Sri Lankan migrant workers, 45,000 of which are women. Majority of the women is housemaids.
