* Fishermen killing: ‘It may be a handiwork of the LTTE’ - India
Saturday, March 31, 2007, 13:54 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 31, Colombo: A top Indian Naval officer yesterday said the killing of four Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait could be the handiwork of the LTTE to create misunderstanding between Sri Lankan and Indian governments.

Naval Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta said “I had taken up the issue of firings on Indian fishermen in an around Rameshwar coast and the Sri Lankan Naval Chief had assured me that his Naval boats will not open fire on Indian fishing boats.”

“The incident being handiwork of LTTE cannot be ruled out. We will investigate all possibilities,” he said.

The six Indians were allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan waters when the naval personnel opened fire at them on Thursday killing two on the spot, while two others drowned in the sea, officials said.

But Sri Lanka Navy yesterday denied such attack and said it would be a work of the Tamil Tigers to tarnish the image of the Sri Lanka Navy.
