Friday, June 8, 2007, 10:28 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 08, Colombo: A three bench panel of judges of Sri Lanka Supreme Court today issued an injunction to the Police to stop the evacuation of residents of Colombo lodges who are from the north and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka.

Supreme Court Judge Nimal Gamini Amaratunga said that the Supreme Court issued this order considering the seriousness of the incident.

Granting permission to proceed a fundamental rights petition filed by the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), the Chairman of the panel of Judges, Nimal E. Dissanayaka said that the action is based on wrong advice.

The Court scheduled a hearing on the case on June 22 and restrained the Inspector General of Police from carrying out any more evacuations of Tamils.

The Secretary to the Ministry of Defense Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Inspector General of Police Victor Perera, Commander-in-Chief of Army Sarath Fonseka and the Officers-in-Charge of the Wellawatta, Kotahena, Pettah and Wattala police stations are the defendants of the petition.
