June 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka university non-academic workers went on a token strike today accusing the authorities for taking revenge from the workers who led the settled strike two weeks ago.
The Convener of the Inter University Joint Committee of Trade Unions said that the Colombo University authorities have suspended work of nine non-academic staff workers and eight workers of the Sripali Campus in Horana have been transferred to the Colombo University. He said the union is leading the strike to urge the authorities to stop the trade union suppression and to revoke the circular to deduct the number of days they struck work from their own leaves or to consider them as no pay leave.
Meanwhile the Colombo University non-academic staff commenced a continuous strike from today urging to revoke the suspension of nine non-academic staff workers.
However, a Colombo University administrator said that the workers were suspended as they damaged public property and behaved unruly during the strike.
