* Preliminary stage of first coal power plant in Sri Lanka finished

June 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Power and Energy clarifying the current situation of the new power generation projects, states that the first phase of the Norochcholai coal power plant has now completed.

Accordingly, 72 families who were residing in the proposed location of the plant have been resettled in alternative locations. The Ministry also said that the basic plans of the coal power plant have now been finished.

The Ministry estimates US $ 1.25 billion for the construction of Norochcholai coal power station, Kerawalapitiya dual-purpose power plant and Upper Kothmale hydropower project. Further US $ 800 million is expected to be needed for the second and third phase of the Norochcholai coal power plant.
