* President meets the committee on DEOCOM Survey

July 31, Colombo: President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday met the High-Level Committee of Experts to Examine and Report on certain concerns regarding the proposed DEOCOM Survey of the Continental Margin of Sri Lanka at the Temple Trees.

Chairman Christopher M Pinto, Co-Chairmen Dr. Hiran W Jayewardene, Prof. P.W. Epasinghe, members Dr. Neil De Silva, Saliya Wickremasooriya, Chris Dharmakeerthi, Secretary to President Lalith Weeratunga, Attorney General H.R. De Silva also participated in the meeting.

The high-level committee appointed by the President in May 2007, continuously monitor, advise and report to the Presidential Secretariat and supervise the submission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS).

The DEOCOM project was launched to carry out a geophysical survey on the outer margin off the seas of Sri Lanka to expand the maritime boundaries from the present 200, to 1000 nautical miles. The primary outcome of the survey is the accurate identification and depth determination of the sediment/basement interface leading to the outer limit.
