Jan 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Leader of the Opposition and of the United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickremesinghe, writing a letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, called on the President to amend several provisions of the Emergency Regulations before they are presented to Parliament next week for another month's extension.
The Opposition Leader stated that the Emergency Regulations are drafted in unduly broad language, presenting a real danger to citizens.
In his letter, the Opposition Leader draws the President’s attention to the “large number of abductions frequently reported” and proposes the appointment of an office of ombudsman or a committee of three persons to hear representations.
The President has not yet responded to the letter dated 27 December and hand delivered to Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga the next day, UNP sources said.
