Wednesday, February 7, 2007, 16:42 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed the Police to investigate the threats against Minister of National Heritage Anura Bandaranaike.

Minister Bandaranaike, younger brother of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday complained that he has received telephone death threats from anonymous callers.

The anonymous phone callers had threatened Mr. Bandaranaike Tuesday that he would be hanged on a lamp post in Attanagalla, the Minister said.

Bandaranaike was demoted from the senior portfolio he earlier held as the Tourism Minister with the recent cabinet reshuffle. He was offered a newly formed Ministry of National Heritage, a subject in the Ministry of Cultural Affairs instead of the Ministry of Tourism.
