* Sri Lanka Marxists wants the government, Opposition and Norway to clarify LTTE claims
Monday, February 26, 2007, 13:52 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 26, Colombo: The Marxist Peoples Liberation Front (JVP) and the Patriotic National Movement (PNM) yesterday urged the Sri Lankan government, Norway and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe to openly state their stand on the Tigers’ claim that Tamil Eelam was recognized by the ceasefire agreement (CFA).

“They have emphasized the fact that the CFA afforded equal status and granted equal powers to the government and the LTTE. That is why we have been agitating to abrogate this since the day we learnt about this treacherous agreement,” the JVP said.

They said that the LTTE waited until the CFA completed five years to get the recognition to their de facto Tamil Eelam.

The JVP said that it would be a serious issue in the future if the government still refuses to abrogate the CFA. “The Government can now abrogate the CFA based on the LTTE’s interpretation of the CFA,” they said.

On the eve of the fifth anniversary of CFA issuing a statement the LTTE said the CFA recognized Tamil Eelam’s de facto existence, with its unique characteristics including “a government comprising a defense force, a police force, a judiciary, a civil administration and other institutions for effective governance of a people, and capability of entering into agreements with other governments with a line of control reflecting the ground reality of the existence of the Tamil homeland demarcated with recognized borders.”
