Dec 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka Supreme Court yesterday ruled that the roadblocks for VIP safety in rush hours were not legal and violated fundamental rights of people.
Hearing a fundamental rights petition by a citizen who said was intimidated at a roadblock in Colombo city, the Supreme Court ordered the Secretary of Defense Ministry and the Inspector General of Police to avoid such action and use alternate measures.
Supreme Court ordered four police officials to pay Rs. 75,000 each and the government to pay Rs. 25,000 to the petitioner as compensation.
The Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, judges Shirani Thilakawardhana and Jagath Balapatabendi heard the petition.
