* Akashi in Sri Lanka for conference, not for peace initiatives

Dec 12, Colombo: Japanese peace envoy Yasushi Akashi, who arrived here on Tuesday night is now in Jaffna to attend a peace conference and he will not involve in any fresh peace initiatives during the visit, officials said.

Diplomatic sources confirmed that Akashi arrived here as he promised few months ago to take part in a conference. “He will not meet any government or the LTTE representatives during the visit,” the sources said.

He is to attend a two-day inter-religious summit in Sri Lanka's northern town of Jaffna on Thursday and make a special address. The visiting envoy will leave the island on Friday morning.
