* Sri Lanka private bus owners to strike seeking redress for fuel price hike
Saturday, August 4, 2007, 4:09 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (PBOA) says that the private buses will stop running on August 9 if the Ministry of Transport will not respond positively to their demands.

The major demand of the PBOA is to raise the minimum bus fare by one rupee from Rs. 5 to 6, to redress the recent fuel price hike.

Sri Lanka’s 19,000-strong private bus fleet is the backbone of the public transport. The strike may paralyze the country’s transport system and may disrupt the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination that is to be held next Wednesday.
