Friday, August 3, 2007, 13:45 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 03, Colombo: Families in three threatened Sinhala villages of Vavuniya district have fled for life and arrived in the adjacent Anuradhapura district, area sources said. The villagers are in fear of attacks from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE).

Around 200 families of Alagalla, Thiruwegama and Aluthgama under Vavuniya South Divisional Secretariat have arrived at the Galkandegama school in Medawachchiya Divisional Secretariat area for safety.

The villagers say that they have serious doubts over their security. The people who are staying in the school premises include many children as well. The Divisional Secretary of Medawachchiya was making arrangements to provide them with food and other requirements.

However, a senior Police official of the area said that all the necessary steps have taken to strengthen the security of the village and the families would soon be resettled in their houses.

Meanwhile, the government was to release Rs. 10,000 of Rs. 75,000 grant for each family in Athawetunaweva Sinhala village to build bunkers for their safety. These villagers were also displaced two times recently due to LTTE mortar attacks.
