Aug 29, Colombo: A Sinhala translator of a popular defense column published in Sunday Times of Sri Lanka has been threatened in his own office by an individual who introduced himself as a Sri Lanka Air Force personnel.

The incident has taken place Monday evening at the editorial office of the Sinhala language Lankadeepa newspaper. The intruder has threatened the Lankadeepa provincial news editor W.G. Gunaratne not to translate the defense column written by Iqbal Athas to the Sunday Times, the sister paper of the Lankadeepa.

The Advisory Editor of Sunday Times, Iqbal Athas who is also working for Jane’s Defense Magazine, did not write his popular defense column last week due to threats to his life following a column written by him that appeared in the previous week.

The column reportedly revealed crucial facts indicating a massive fraud with regard to the purchase of four Mig 27 aircrafts for Sri Lanka Air Force from Ukraine. The police withdrew the security provided to him after the column was published.
