* Sri Lanka ruling alliance goes back to old name
Sunday, April 29, 2007, 13:39 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s ruling alliance has decided to go back to the former name of People’s Alliance (PA) instead of the current United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA). Marxist People’s Liberation Front (JVP) which is one of the major constituents of the UPFA is now working out of the alliance making UPFA defunct.

Major constituent of the PA, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has approved the move at a recent central committee meeting. SLFP’s move was hailed by the minor parties of the PA at a recent meeting of the party heads.

PA was formed prior to the 1994 election victory with the popular symbol of chair. UPFA was formed in 2004 as a result of the SLFP alliance with the JVP with the symbol of betel leaf.

The upcoming Workers’ Day celebrations will be held tomorrow under the name of PA.
