Nov 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka government is considering introducing amendments to the current state pension fund legislations to accommodate a Migrant Fund to establish a retirement fund for the migrant workers, Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment Promotion sources said.
The government is considering this measure for the benefit of the 1.5 million strong migrant workforce that is minimally benefited from the government social welfare schemes usually.
Remittances from Sri Lankan migrant workers in foreign countries are a major pillar of the economy. They remitted 1.539 billion dollars to the country during the first eight months of this year. Migrant worker remittances last year were 1.918 billion dollars. Central Bank of Sri Lanka has high expectations to double the figure to 3.0 billion dollars by the end of 2007.
