Dec 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition says that Police and Excise officials have arrested about 500 persons who were smoking in public or consuming liquor violating the provisions of the Tobacco and Alcohol Act that came into effect from December 2006.
The majority of the arrested were smoking in public places violating the new law. They have been arrested within five days of the implementation of the Act that deals harshly with the offenders.
These individuals are liable to be fined Rs. 5000 or to be imprisoned for two years or be subjected to both punishments according to the Act.
