Dec 03, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government is likely to sign an agreement this month with an Indian company to construct a coal power plant at Sampur, recently captured from the LTTE, Ceylon Electricity Board sources said.
India's NTPC Company has already expressed its desire to sign an agreement. The coal power plant is to be jointly owned by the Ceylon Electricity Board and the Indian company.
The coal power plant was earlier to be built in Trincomalee, but the Sri Lankan government later decided to shift it to Sampur, on the other side of Koddiyar Bay from where the Trincomalee harbour is situated.
A group of officials from the Ceylon Electricity Board and the Finance Ministry recently visited the area to study the feasibility of the proposal to set up a coal power plant.
