Dec 31, Colombo: Newspaper offices in Sri Lanka's Jaffna peninsula, isolated by the closure of the main land supply route, are reportedly facing an acute shortage of newsprint and printing ink to publish the daily newspapers.
The newspapers have now been size-changed to tabloids and the number of pages and print orders have also been slashed, sources from Jaffna said.
The price of newsprint in the open market in Jaffna city has risen around three-fold since last August.
There are three daily newspapers in Jaffna that have an average circulation of around 30,000.
