* Around hundred billion rupees to be spent for new railways in Sri Lanka

Dec 27, Colombo: Railroad Development Ministry of Sri Lanka has high expectations to construct four new railway lines at the cost of over Rs. 95.3 billion (around $ 900 million).

The Ministry expects to finish the constructions of these rail lines before 2014.

The 113 kilometre extension of Southern railway from Mathara to Katharagama in Deep South is the major project among these. Padukka-Hambantota via Rathnapura, Kurunegala-Habarana via Dambulla and Panadura-Horana are the other planned rail roads.

The construction of the Mathara-Katharagama rail road has commenced now and after the construction of a major bridge across Nilwala River few kilometres beyond the current end of the road, the line will be extended to Beliaththa in the first stage.
