Dec 22, Colombo: A Sri Lankan residing in the United States has finished tracing 820 graffiti on the world famous Sigiriya Mirror Wall, a provincial correspondent of a Sri Lankan daily reported. Dr. B. Priyanga has occasionally visited the cultural site for twenty years for his research.
The academic, who loved Sigiriya since the early age of 15 years, submitted his studies on Sigiriya graffiti for his post-graduate research. He wishes to hand over the copy of the drafted graffiti to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage.
Sigiriya, a World Heritage Site, is a rock fortress constructed in the fifth century A.D. by King Kashyapa. He decorated the environs of the fortress with beautiful frescoes and later visitors to the site wrote their impressions in prose and verse on the Mirror Wall.
The wall with its smoothened surface is believed to have been constructed to guard the frescoes from the wind. The renowned Sri Lankan archaeologist Senerath Paranavithana had earlier traced 685 graffiti on the Mirror Wall.
